History of the College

Government Arts College for Women (Autonomous), Pudukkottai, was established in the year 1969. The college was started with Pre-University Course and has grown gradually in strength and stature in every sphere of activity. At present 13 Under Graduate Courses, 10 Post Graduate Courses, 6 M.Phil. and 6 Ph.D Courses are being offered by the college. Shift System was introduced in the year 2007 by the State Government Policy of Education with the available infrastructure. Four Under Graduate Courses have been introduced in Shift II. The institution aims to uplift women students from Pudukkottai district and also from nearby districts like Thiruchirappalli, Perambalur and Sivagangai.

The college was affiliated to the University of Madras till 1982. Since then, the College has been affiliated to Bharathidasan University, Thiruchirappalli. The year 2004 was a milestone in the history of the College during which the College was accredited with B++ by NAAC and Autonomous status was conferred. Autonomy has provided academic freedom to design innovative curricula and modern methods of teaching and evaluation. It provides a new dimension to the institution, a new mindset to the teachers and new hope to the students. The college was re-accredited with B (CGPA 2.85/4) during second cycle of NAAC in 2011 and with B++ (CGPA 2.76/4) during the third cycle of NAAC in 2017.

Since 2005 Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) has been followed in curriculum. It facilitates students earn extra credits. The Minimum credits is 140 for Under Graduate Courses, 90 for Post Graduate Courses and 24 for M.Phil Courses. Elective and Inter-Disciplinary courses, Environmental Studies, Gender Studies and Value Education are offered in addition. Skill-Based Papers on Yoga Practices and Stress management help students maintain their mental and physical health. Extension activity enhances social responsibility of the students.

The development of the college in academic, extra–curricular and extension aspects is tremendous. The growing number of University Rank holders and Sports achievers are worth mentioning. The motto being “Self-Reliance and Service”, the institution aspires to inculcate Self reliance among women students and empower them through education by enhancing the qualities of competence, confidence and excellence there by providing Service to the community. The College proudly celebrates its Golden Jubilee Anniversary this year with the vision to promote employ-ability.

Curriculum

In UG Courses Part-I Tamil, Part-II English and Part-III Core Course, Allied Course and Major based Elective Courses are taught. Under Part IV Non Major Elective and Skill Enhancement Papers are offered. In Part-V ability Enhancement Papers are offered. In PG Courses, Core Courses and Elective Courses Project are taught.

Extra-curricular Activities of our College

National Service Scheme

National Service Scheme (NSS) is active from the day it started its units in 1974, 1986 and 1994 respectively in Government Arts College for Women, Pudukkottai. There are three Units under the guidance of three coordinators. Each unit has 100 students from all the departments. The NSS Volunteers should contribute 120 hours of service and also attend a 10 days camp, thereafter they will receive a certificate. This certificate is valid for their employment too. NSS with the motto “NOT ME BUT YOU”, attempts to establish meaningful linkages between ‘Campus and Community’, ‘College and Village’ and ‘Knowledge and Action’. It is an extension dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions.

Youth Red Cross

Youth represent a substantial part of the membership of Red Cross for its humanitarian commitment. 200 Young volunteers from various departments with One Coordinator, make a significant contribution to meeting the needs of the most vulnerable people within their local communities through Red Cross youth programme. Training is given for Disaster management; Fire prevention and rescue operations and as well as promoting voluntary blood donation among the students.

Youth Development Service

Youth development programs seek to improve the lives of youth by meeting their basic physical, developmental, and social needs and by helping them to build the competencies needed to become successful adults. One coordinator trains the students especially with the leadership skills and the holistic growth of them.

Red Ribbon Club

Red Ribbon Club (RRC) is a voluntary on-campus intervention implemented; aimed at creating awareness about the high-risk perception and preventing HIV. Our College actively creates awareness to reduce new occurrences of HIV infection among youth by raising their risk perception through awareness on HIV prevention methods.

Remedial coaching to SC, ST, & Minority Students

The SC/ST and minority Cell was constituted in the year 2008-2009. After the establishment of the Cell, it specifically concentrates on the welfare of the SC/ST and minority students by giving effective training for competitive examinations.

College council

The College council consists of the Principal and Heads of the Department of each Subject of study, Physical Director, and Librarian. The Council is empowered to consider and provide valuable suggestions for the upliftment and the development of the College.

Hostels

TN Government social welfare board provides hostel facilities for SC,ST, MBC/DNC and BC respectively.

Students’ cooperative stores:

Under 20-point programme of government, from 1976 our college has students’ cooperative stores. Since its inception it actively helps the students. In 1992-1993 it won the best award for college students’ cooperative stores.

Parent – Teachers’ Association

The Parent Teacher Association is a statutorily constituted elected body which aims at the overall development of the college. Parental co-operation in creating a healthy campus atmosphere is of utmost importance. The PTA aspires for co-operation and participation of parents in full measure, in the wholesome activities of the college. An Executive Committee, comprising the Principal as Chairman, a teacher elect as the Secretary is active in our college. A general body, consists of all the parents and teachers, meets occasionally and it gives paramount importance in ensuring a healthy and congenial academic atmosphere in the college. Rs. 10/- for membership and Rs. 50/- for annual subscription is collected from the members as per the Government norms. The PTA has been focusing on the growth and development of the college since its inception.

Alumni Association

An Executive Committee, comprising the Principal as Chairman, a teacher elect as the Secretary is active in our college. The members are all the out gone students of our college. The main aim of the Association is to maintain the link between college and Alumni and share their details of employment and achievements. It was also formed with a view to keep the silken threads of the attachments between the old students and the Institution. Every year the Convocation is conducted through this Association. The membership amount is Rs.25/-.

Anti-Ragging Committee

As Per Notification in regard to Prevention and Prohibition of Ragging in the University and UGC Act, The committee has been constituted in our college. The committee is headed by the Principal and the members representatives are Heads of all the Department, Student president, Student Secretary Parent Teacher Association members and Department of police and It strives hard to prohibit and prevent ragging in our college. Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Ragging Act 1997 provided for punishment of those to indulge in ragging with two years imprisonment and Rs.10000/-fine and more over the students cannot proceed for further studies. So the students are created awareness to Anti-Ragging through various activities.

Social Service League

At Around 10 Students Who Were in the State of Poverty, were Given Examination Fee amount.SSL Main role is Keep the Campus Clean and maintain health and Sanitation. It also Conducts Competition for the Visually challenged School Children in Pudukkottai .

Computer Literacy Programme

From 2000-2001, The Tamil nadu Government has introduced CLP for all the College Students to Provide basic Computer Knowledge. Our College has Motivated the Students to Join the CLP and They are Leaving Actively.

Soft Skill Centre

Since 2013-2014 Academic year Soft Skill Centre with a Co-ordinator is actively Training the Students .Its Main Objective is to impart Soft Skills and Students for Employability.

Career Orientation Programme:

To empower and enrich the students from 2008-2009 (Educational policy) our college has Career Orientation Programme since 2008. Along with the Degree courses the students and equip them the knowledge to attend the competitive Examinations. 30 deserved students are chosen and are given special training.

Quiz Club:

Since 2003-2004 our college is active in imparting knowledge to the students through the quiz club by organizing various quiz competitions.
