Criteria for Blood Donation

General Appearance
A prospective donor should be in a good health
Donors should be between the age of 18-60 years

A donor weight 45 kg can give 350 ml blood (8ml/kg) body weight is addition to pilot samples for processing those weighing 55 kg or more may give 450 ml blood as well s pilot samples (for our body build 40 kg body weight is sufficient )

Blood Pressure  
The systolic blood pressure should be between 100 and 180 mm of Hg and diastolic pressure between 50 to 100 mm of Hg.
The Pulse should be between 80 to 100 beats per minute and regular.
Oral temperature should not exceed 37.5"C
Donor Skin
The skin at the venipuncture site should be free of any lesion or scar of the needle pricks, indicates of addiction to Narcotics or scar of he needle pricks, indicates of addiction to Narcotics or frequent blood donation (As in the case of professional donors)
Systemic Examination
Clinically Heart, Lungs and Abdomen should be normal donors should not be anaemic (Hb must be more than 12.5g%)
Diseases should not be present 4 Recent fever (within 2 weeks)
4 H/O suggestive of HIV Hepatitis A and D, STD
4 T.B epilepsy, Bronchial Asthma
Recent surgery (6 months for major and 2 months for minor)
The following drugs if taken by the donor defer him in for a period of 2 to 3 days.

Antibiotics specially penicillin groups of drugs
Aspirin and other Salicylates
OHA and Anti HT drugs should not be taken on    the day of donation.
